Thomas was inspired to paint this work after dinner atop Howell Mountain with his friend Dennis Cakebread at Dancing Bear Ranch. The ranch was named after bears who kept invading the vineyards at night to steal berries. If you look closely at the upper right glass, the cork and pull resemble a bear downhill skiing—purely unintentional on Thomas' part.
