Batman: Detective Comics 31" is an Alex Ross illustration that pays tribute to the legendary creator of Batman. Reinterpreted by Ross in his photorealistic style is the original cover for Detective Comics #31. The comic entitled "Batman Verses The Vampire Part 1" marked the first appearance of Bruce Wayne's girlfriend Julie Madison, the Mad Monk, the Batplane and the Batarang.

The story follows Batman who discovers that his fiancee Julie Madison, while under a hypnotic spell, attempts to murder a man. Bruce Wayne, in an attempt to help, takes Julie to see a therapist who recommends she take an extended vacation to France and Hungary. Accompanying her on the voyage in order to keep an eye on her, Bruce notices Julie falling under another hypnotic trance. The man responsible for Julie's state is a masked figure known as the Monk. It is up to Batman to thwart the evil plans of the Mad Monk and rescue his fiancee from the perils of danger.
