West Hollywood's Rainbow Bar and Grill was a no brainer for the second offering in my "churches of rock n' roll" series. When I stepped off the plane in L.A. for the first time many years ago, my first destination was very clear-it wasn't Disney Land or Universal Studios, it was a family restaurant/dive bar on the Sunset Strip.

Being somewhat of a rock historian, the Rainbow was almost a pilgrimage for me. You would be hard pressed to read a rock star's biography without it mentioned. There are entire books and documentaries dedicated to the history and debauchery of this landmark, not to mention it also happens to be the home of the famed Hollywood Vampires, a drinking club of some of rock n' roll's most notorious characters. Personally, it has been the location for a landmark birthday in which my over-indulgence warranted an eye roll from comedian Jeff Ross, and a crazy Christmas eve doing shots with Wes Scantlin (Puddle of Mud) as he inexplicitly alternated between himself and a black-wigged alter ego.

My reasons for visiting L.A. have increased over the years, it no longer feels like a vacation destination, more like a second home. No matter the reason for my visit, my fist order of business is to always grab a drink at the Rainbow. The rock n' roll attitude that drips from the walls is always a huge inspiration for me, and there are no diminishing returns, you know what you are going to get. Times change-The Rainbow does not...and I've still never been to Disney.
