I was contacted by a collector back in July and asked if I had ever considered doing a Bruce Lee piece. I was immediately intrigued but knowing very little about the icon, I wasn't sure if he would fit into my brand. My research started with a documentary and at about the 30 second mark of the film, I realized that not only did Mr. Lee fit the criteria of what I look for in a subject, he was clearly a glowing omission in my Rebels series. Simply put, Bruce not only embodied everything that would constitute a "rebel", but his charisma and attitude checked all the boxes of a complete rockstar too. The concept for this piece was derived from Bruce's ‘be like water' theory in which he states:

"Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend."

The water dragon panels on this triptych piece are meant to represent both these states of water. One panel is done with hard rigid lines and sharp crashing waves, while the other represents soft flowing lines and water that is formless. To steal a quote from Mr. Lee himself, "You would do well to learn from its example."
