Struggle is the inertia of progress. It is exhilarating, fulfilling, yet the battle is perpetuated as the complexity of life embraces us. As we grow in our struggle, the more we strive to conquer our own self, the higher we rise. In "Rise Above", Henry Asencio depicts a centralized figure with arms raised in a display of self-resistance. Through the expression of the charcoal, the artist focuses on the musculature as a metaphor for self-contained inner struggle. The drawing lends itself to a universal sense of contained celebration and triumph through inner growth.
